40,000 Wisconsinites Stand to Lose Federal Unemployment Benefits

The Wisconsin Budget Project has released a new issue brief on the looming expiration of federally-funded Emergency Unemployment Compensation for people who have been unemployed longer than the 26 weeks covered by state-funded unemployment benefits financed through a payroll tax on employers. Two million people nationwide—40,000 of them in Wisconsin—stand to lose their benefits Dec. 29 unless Congress acts to address this less-publicized aspect of the so-called “fiscal cliff.”
