The number of government workers in Wisconsin compared to the state’s population has dropped to its lowest levels in nearly 20 years. Wisconsin ranks 40th in the number of government workers per population, meaning Wisconsin’s state and local governments are leaner than all but 10 other states.

Compared to other states, Wisconsin has relatively few state and local government employees for the size of our population. Our analysis is based on the preliminary 2011 figures released by the Census Bureau in August 2012 on state and local government employees and payroll. Read full publication.
